In a March 2, 1972 game between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks, Bobby Orr put up a Gordie Howe Hat Trick. Orr scored a goal and assisted on another while getting into a second period fight with Rosaire Paiement.
The Goal
Bobby scored at 11:10 of the third period, assisted by Phil Esposito. It was a powerplay goal with Andre Boudrias of the Canucks serving two minutes for too many men on the ice. This was Boston's seventh and last goal of the game and 30th of the season for Orr.
The Assist
At 19:14 of the second period, Phil Esposito scored his 58th goal of the season on the powerplay. Assists went to Fred Stanfield and Bobby Orr. This was Boston's fifth goal of the game and Esposito's third, completing the hat trick.
The Fight
At 6:07 of the second period, Orr and Rosaire Paiement got into a tussle. Both were assessed five minutes for fighting. In addition, Bobby was handed two minutes for slashing and Paiement was given a minor penalty for elbowing. It was the only fight of the game. No stranger to the penalty box, Rosaire sat 117 PIM over 69 games with Vancouver in 1971-72. Orr sat 106 minutes in 76 games that year.
The Game
Played at the Boston Garden on March 2, 1972, this was a battle between teams at the opposite end of the standings. The Bruins won the game 7-3 for the 47th win of the season. For the Canucks, it was their 41st loss to go with just 16 wins.
Bobby Orr might have achieved the Gordie Howe Hat Trick but it was Phil Esposito that starred in the game. Espo scored his 56th, 57th and 58th goals of the year and added two assists for a five point night. In Phil's usual fashion, he had nine shots on net. Between the pipes for the Canucks was Dunc Wilson, facing a total of 38 shots.
When it came to the game winning goal, neither Orr or Esposito were in on the action. The fourth goal of the game for Boston came in the second period. Fred Stanfield scored his 21st of the year, assisted by Dallas Smith and Don Marcotte.
Four of Boston's seven goals were scored with the man advantage. Even goaltender Ed Johnston got in on the offense, recording an assist in the first period on Esposito's first goal of the game. For Johnston, it was one of four points he recorded during the 1971-72 National Hockey League season.
